What is Rolfing?Rolfing is the science and art of structurally, functionally and energetically integrating the human body through soft tissue (fascial) manipulation and movement education. The practice of Rolfing evolved through 50 years of observation and study of the human body by Ida Rolf, Ph.D. Fundamental principles of organization of the human body-in-gravity are at the core of the design of a series of Rolfing sessions that can improve the overall well being and health of a client.
Rolfing can help people of all ages with various physical discomforts. A Rolfer can address successfully all injuries, neck pain, back problems, impaired mobility and other difficulties caused by accidents, and compensation patterns adopted in response to difficult work situations. Additionally, improvement in athletic performance, or general appearance, or enhancement of personal growth towards realization of one's potentials can be the outcome of the Rolfing experience. Overall, Rolfing results in an everyday deep sense of comfort and ease in one's body.
The long-term success in alleviating physical discomfort and pain through Rolfing is due to the reestablishment of the balance and support in the whole body. Sometimes treatments offered by MD's, physical therapists or chiropractors treat only the symptoms rather than address the underlying causes. When the body is out of alignment or disorganized, treating the symptoms may only temporarily relieve physical and emotional discomfort. Rolfing then is an excellent alternative.
There is no mystery to Rolfing. Scientific studies and the experience of many who have completed Rolfing have confirmed its benefits. Often the first session will demonstrate if Rolfing can provide the help sought by the client. A Rolfer is gentle and effective. FAQ

yCASE1; ScoliosiszHow does my body get out of balance?
The relationship between various body components can be impaired through injury or chronic tension. Your body not only incorporates your responses to cultural attitudes, messages and beliefs, but also reflects your history of physical and emotional injuries. Trauma, abuse, inhibited expression and fear, or the way you perform your daily work, will fix distortions in your body. Even small bumps or falls that seem insignificant can cause you to protect the area by tightening muscles. The whole body will begin to shift to adapt to the deviation. Substantial injuries will result in strong adaptive holding patterns. When this happens the rest of your body must compensate to maintain balance. FAQ

How does Rolfing align the body?
A Rolfer helps your body to release fixed patterns of compensation.
In Rolfing the body's connective tissue network is systematically organized to align various body segments. This connective tissue network of ligaments, tendons and coverings of the bones, muscles and organs is known as the myofascial system. Fascia is the "organ of structure" in your body. It supports the skeleton and soft tissues, stabilizes the position of the bones, determines the direction of muscle pulls and movement, and gives the body its shape.
The aim of a Rolfer is to free-up restrictions between fascial layers to allow muscles to return to a balanced system of relationships.
Rolfing creates length and space in your body, which allow increased range of motion and flexibility. Muscles and bones return to their natural alignment and relationships, which in turn, results in more efficient movement. This attention to proper body goniometry and anatomical relationships distinguishes Rolfing from other forms of bodywork. FAQ
